Storage Tips

When planning to store your belongings, take time to prepare. Preparing to move-in to a storage unit will save time and make sure you efficiently use your new storage space. Making efficient use of your storage unit will help you maximize space and can grant easy access to your items when you need them. Protecting your items is a pivotal step during your move. Properly protecting and packaging your belongings will prevent any unnecessary damage that can occur during the move-in and move-out process. Listed below are a few helpful tips and reminders to make your moving and storage experience smooth and worry free.

  • Create a checklist of all items stored so you don’t misplace anything. Keep a copy in the storage unit so you know what is inside, especially if you rent long term.
  • Clean and dry all items before packing. This will prevent dust, mold and mildew from forming. Move-in clean and move-out clean.
  • Consolidate items of larger quantities like towels and washcloths in larger boxes. These items are not heavy, making handling in a large box easier.
  • Use smaller boxes for heavier items in quantity such as books. Also stack books flat instead of upright so you don’t damage the spine of the book.
  • Store items you may need up front, to make access to them easy.
  • Label all boxes and containers to make it easier to identify what’s inside.
  • You can also use clear containers instead of boxes to identify contents inside.
  • Breakdown larger items, bedframes, tables and other furniture. Be sure to save all hardware in a bag and keep with the item.
  • Wrap furniture legs in bubble wrap so other items won’t scratch them while moving.
  • Seal boxes with packing tape to prevent dust particles from entering.
  • Tightly seal containers and cartons to prevent unwanted moisture from entering.
  • Use furniture covers, mattress bags and utility bags to protect from scratching, dust and moisture.
  • You can store couches and other furniture upright or on its side to maximize space.
  • Wrap breakable items in bubble wrap for added protection before boxing.
  • Place fragile items on top of other items. Never put heavy packages on top of fragile contents.
  • Pack your storage unit neatly to maximize space.
  • If you have available space, create a walkway to make accessing items easier.
  • Use the height of the unit to your advantage and stack boxes and containers up. But be careful not to overload and cause stacked items to tip.
